About

Joy
I am a software engineer at Yahoo!, and I write code for the finance site: http://finance.yahoo.com. I am mostly a backend developer and at the moment I write webservices with C++. I also like to make usable web applications and tools whenever I need to reduce tedium in my work. My career interests are primarily in solving complex problems using fast and efficient algorithms, be it finance, bioinformatics, or developing an untrained speech-to-text converter.

LinkedIn would be a good place to check out my professional background.

This blog is my primary publishing platform for carefully produced content. I also have a posterous blog strictly for casual events in my life, generously sprinkled with cellphone photos.

Some history

I grew up in Santiniketan, a small town near Kolkata, India. My primary education was in an open-air school which made a profound impact in my life. From an early age I liked to design and create things as a hobby, be it electronics or cardboard models. At 15, I got my first computer – a 40Mhz 80386 with 4MB RAM. I learnt programming with BASIC and then moved on to C. The fascination with computing devices eventually got me a graduate degree in computer science. To this day, it motivates me to develop solutions for real world problems.

Inspiration

I am driven by productivity. I get my inspiration from the works of great engineers in the software and design industry, as well as famous photographers and creative artists. I believe life is too short to not indulge in the awesome enjoyment that comes from developing usable and aesthetic products.
