About

I am a technology enthusiast and a self-made photographer based in Sunnyvale, California (originally from Santiniketan, West Bengal, India)

By profession I am a software engineer at Yahoo! Finance, one of the popular financial information portals. Programming is the first love of my life and I get to enjoy a lot of it at Yahoo.

Having fun while being productive is the mantra of my life. Photography is my primary creativity outside work, the others being woodworking and woodturning. I also love to tour on a motorcycle, which adds new elements to my imagery as well.

Photography

The love of photography originated from my addiction to road trips on a motorcycle. A 3MP digicam (Kodak DX3900) in 2002 graduated me to a serious imagemaker. Articles about photography on the web got me excited, and around early 2003, I got my first SLR - a Nikon FM10. The rest, as the cliche goes, is history.

I shoot a variety of subjects but the end goal is the same. I like to enjoy the process and create emotional imagery. Photography is a therapy to keep myself alive in the monotony of life. Being a fan of national geographic magazines I am forever curious about the people and places of the world. At present I often shoot portraits and fine art landscapes, and make inkjet prints at home. My long term goal is to travel around the world and capture the changing landscapes, human condition, and interesting moments in our lives.

Tools

Having worked with multiple formats and mediums I have happily settled with digital (Nikon D700) for regular exploratory work. I still use film sometimes for fine art photography in a relaxed form. Film slows me down in a way digital does not. The deliberate approach to make every single exposure on a Mamiya RB67 is quite addictive. Viewing 6x7 color slides on a light table still blows me away. I also shoot black and white negatives in both medium format and 35mm, just so I can enjoy b/w silver gelatin printmaking in a wet darkroom. Here is what I have in my camera bag, in case you are interested.
